A return to the home of European cliff diving for the season's third stop
This event will be LIVE on June 02 at 4.30 PM local time (2.30 PM GMT) on www.redbullcliffdiving.com, Red Bull TV, Facebook & Youtube.
70,000 passionate fans witnessed a record-breaking season finale last September, when Gary Hunt earned his 7th Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series title while Australia's Rhiannan Iffland made it a hat-trick of World Series championship wins and laid claim to being the most successful female diver in the sport's history. Nothing less of a spectacle is to be expected when the cliff divers return to Polignano a Mare, the place where houses rise from the rocks, for the 75th event since May 2009.
Hosted in Italy's Puglia region for the seventh time in 11 years, the sport's European home provides the most unusual take-off point: Through a private living room the male and female athletes enter the platforms mounted on a rooftop terrace 27m and 21m above the Adriatic Sea.
The birthplace of Domenico Modugno, writer and interpreter of the world famous song "Volare" (flying), not only means mozzarella, delicious raw fish and ice cream, but people of all ages fascinated by jumping into the water as cliffs are the foundation of everyday life, with the town itself perched on the precipice.
In 2019 the event concurs with one of the most solemn Italian anniversaries: la Festa della Repubblica (Republic Day) that commemorates when in 1946 a new democratic form of government began. An anniversary that is very much felt and participated by both the institutions and the citizens.
Part of the province of Bari, Puglia, its inhabitants number just a little more than 16,000. Puglia's scenic coastline stretches over 750 kilometers; its biggest city is Bari, hallmarked by the Swabian castle, museums, several churches and monuments, and modern facilities such as an international airport, a tourist and industrial port, and fast railway connections.
An extremely pleasant climate makes this region the ideal setting for sports and nature activities all year round: trekking trails, cycling routes, horse riding, golf greens, diving centers, beaches equipped for windsurfing, sailing and kite surfing are Puglia's sports tourism highlights.
