More than 50 people including athletes, locals and tourists followed the call for a beach clean-up Thursday morning by the Raouché shore. Together with the Live Love Beirut Volunteers the founders of The Clean Cliffs Project Eleanor Townsend Smart (USA) and Owen Weymouth (GBR), filled over a 100 bags with trash. In an attempt to give back and raise the awareness for everyone's responsibility for the earth, it's the projects goal to turn the pure and natural places into cleaner and better environments.
Besides many of the competing athletes such as Maria Paula Quintero and Miguel Garcia, David Colturi and Oleksiy Prygorov, Colombia's cliff diving legend Orlando Duque as well as international adventure blogger and environmentalist Jackson Grove made their way to Lebanon's capital city to be part of this clean up.
It turned out a big success and hopefully a kick-starter for the local communities to continue this path with many supporters, as 24-year-old Townsend Smart puts it: "It's a big problem with the education right now. People don't know that problem if they're not looking for it. So to see it, become educated, and take part in it it's going to help people start making a difference in their daily habits."
Although the American sees her initiatives as a way to give back to the environment where she and the other elite divers get to showcase their breath-taking sport, getting the word out and getting involved are the first important steps to improve the current situation and increase the awareness of pollution.
The divers' paths continues pure and natural when they get ready for the 5th stop of the 2019 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series taking place this weekend from Beirut's most significant landmark, the Pigeon Rocks in Raouché, whose immediate surroundings were cleaned up in an earlier 400 people strong initiative by Live Love Beirut.
