An 8th visit in 12 years to the European home of cliff diving

A summer in the beautiful Puglia town of Polignano a Mare isn't complete these days without a visit from the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, and 7 previous stops here in the past 11 years have helped rubber stamp its reputation as the sport's European home. In the place where houses rise from the rocks, the sight of cliff divers leaping aesthetically into the Adriatic Sea is now as familiar as the age-old staples of mozzarella, delicious raw fish and ice cream in these parts.

And the spectacle never fails to bring out the locals and tourists in huge numbers, with thousands of spectators surrounding the take-off spot on land and water every year. Despite the familiarity though, the unique route to the platforms never loses its charm, with divers having to emerge from the water, negotiate a crowded beach, walk barefoot through a bustling old town before finally, via a private living room, arriving at the platforms mounted on a rooftop terrace.

Part of the province of Bari, Puglia, the town's inhabitants number just a little more than 16,000. Puglia's scenic coastline stretches over 750 kilometers; its biggest city is Bari, hallmarked by the Swabian castle, museums, several churches and monuments, and modern facilities such as an international airport, a tourist and industrial port, and fast railway connections.

An extremely pleasant climate makes this region the ideal setting for sports and nature activities all year round: trekking trails, cycling routes, horse riding, golf greens, diving centers, beaches equipped for windsurfing, sailing and kite surfing are Puglia's sports tourism highlights.

Discover how to easily reach Puglia at www.weareinpuglia.it.

Polignano a Mare is the birthplace of Domenico Modugno, writer and interpreter of the world-famous song "Volare", which means to fly. This summer, the world's best cliff divers will pay homage once again by spreading their wings from up to 27m.
