At the second stop of the 2018 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series in Bilbao, it was all about art as the world's best cliff divers displayed their eye-catching skills beside the famous Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. One man who knows all about art both in the air and on canvas is Poland's Kris Kolanus, whose other great passion away from competition is graffiti art.
Of course, Kolanus's canvas is generally a wall and his brush a can of spray paint, but the striking imagery he produces is as intriguing and stunning as his acrobatic mid-air manoeuvres.
"Graffiti is kind of meditation for me," says the 31-year-old. "When I'm going close to the wall I can spend hours and forget about anything. I can relax my mind."
And the Pole, who kicked off this season with a sensational win in Texas, also believes there is a link between the two art forms:
"When we go on the platform we always feel adrenaline," explains Kolanus. "This is the same with graffiti, you feel that adrenaline rush. Diving is art too. In just three seconds you have to be focused, twist, somersualt, keep your toes pointed. It's the same with graffiti; you have a short amount of time, maybe three minutes, and then you have to show your skills."
One thing Kolanus didn't get the chance to spray in Spain was the champagne, after finishing in 11th place, but judging by his start in the USA there will surely be more podiums to come this season for the versatile artist.
