When the most competitive season to date celebrates its grand final on October 21, it's four dives to win the King Kahekili trophy and three men are still in contention for the title. For 28-year-old Jonathan Paredes, who sits in second place sandwiched between the Brits Gary Hunt and Blake Aldridge, this is the time to go all out and fine-tune his skills.
"I've already heard a lot about this hidden place in France and the local guide Loulou, so it was an honour for me to dive there and share this experience with him," says Paredes about his adventure in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
"It's such a cool feeling! I'm really happy when I go somewhere outside of competition and dive in beautiful places like this without any pressure; this is when I remember why I choose my sport."
In a sport where the challenges go way beyond hitting the water perfectly vertical at speeds of up to 85km/h after three seconds of diving complexity, the ability of adapting to various conditions, reference points and surroundings plays a major role on the way to cliff diving glory.
"I always take experiences like this with me in the best way," explains the World Series' style master, "it's one more lesson for my diving career and one more place for me as a diver."
With the final stage of the 2017 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series set at a brand new location beside the Lago Ranco waterfalls of Chile and the three title contenders divided by no more than 150 points, every dive on the plus side counts. Whether or not the Mexican's way to prepare for the closest battle in four years will pay off in his favor, is going to be decided when the cliff diving elite meets again in less than two weeks in South America.
