The placid waters surrounding Hell's Gate will once again be beautifully disturbed this June, and not just by the piercing entries of the world's best cliff divers. The arrival of the World Series in these parts has been cause for celebration in five of the last six seasons, with thousands of fans descending on the location in boats, kayaks and paddleboards for a sporting lake party. Tunes and chatter subside only for the three-second acrobatic dives, before raucous applause and cheers greet the athletes upon their resurfacing.
Possum Kingdom Lake - in the state where everything is bigger - is nestled deep in the valley of the Palo Pinto Mountains, approximately 145 miles west of Dallas. The massive reservoir, created by damming the Brazos River, with its incredibly deep waters and its sheer cliffs, boasts the epidemy of lake life. The visual feat of two towering cliffs is only to be outdone by the divers' complex manoeuvres from almost three times the Olympic diving platform height.
The last three visits to this spot, out of an overall five, have thrown up three different winners in the men's – Kris Kolanus (POL), Blake Aldridge (GBR) and Jonathan Paredes (MEX). Record women's champion and two-time winner in Texas, Rhiannan Iffland (AUS), will aim to rule at Hell's Gate once more, following a rare missed podium in 2018.
Expect red-hot weather and a boisterous atmosphere when the cliff diving elite return to the Lone Star State this summer.
