Eyes on the sky: the Road to Polignano has started for Alessandro De Rose, the only Italian diver participating in the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series.
From North to South, we will see De Rose perform a series of breathtaking dives in some of Italy's most striking locations as part of a project aimed to show just how spectacular the diving discipline is. Once he arrives in Polignano a Mare in late July, the athlete will be competing in the Italian leg of the World Series. But first he will be stopping in Trieste, Portovenere, Bagni di Lucca, Fiordo di Furore and Gargano to demonstrate his stunning dives.
What does a performance by the Italian cliff diver involve? A dive from 22 metres, a speed of 85 km/h and breathtaking acrobatics. Born in Cosenza, De Rose has now lived and trained in Trieste for five years and started his journey from his adopted home. The first location chosen was the marvellous Duino Castle, a private residence overlooking the sea. Just a few kilometres from county capital Trieste, it has belonged to the Princely House of Thurn und Taxis for over 400 years.
"I couldn't have started my road to Polignano anywhere else," declared De Rose with emotion after his performance. "Trieste is my city now."
Exceptional diver Pino Auber also performed at Duino Castle alongside De Rose. The local athlete, class of '38, began diving at the age of 57 and hasn't looked back. He currently competes in the Master category and has won many national and international victories in European and World High Diving Championships.
